For now, let’s start by setting the stage.Ĭhimera Ant plays out against a backdrop of continuous war. “Fortunately,” this intermingling of human and ant instincts isn’t restricted solely to one side – as Chimera Ant unfolds, even the humans begin to demonstrate that ant nature isn’t perhaps quite so inhuman as it seems. As her army of Ants grows, their human DNA becomes more and more prominent, and the “imperfections” of human nature become more and more apparent in their behavior. In order to do that, she constructs her child out of the best pieces available – and in the first of Chimera Ant’s many strange reflections, the construction of a Perfect Being end up requiring a great deal of flawed, self-involved, self-destructive human beings. The queen of the Ants wishes to build a Perfect Being – the ultimate animal, destined to rule over all others. It catalogs the rise of the (surprise) Chimera Ants, a species that continuously evolves, absorbing the quirks and powers of any species it consumes. Or perhaps such a species doesn’t even need to be offered a chance – if we were ever put against a creation that combined humanity’s intelligence and strength with an animalistic unity of purpose, would we even stand a chance?Ĭhimera Ant is a story about that question – or at least, about that question and a number of others.
Perhaps such a species deserves that chance.
Perhaps a species somewhat more animal, more willing to be part of a grand organism than a wild, unpredictable individual. Perhaps another species could do better than us – perhaps a species more interested in its own collective survival, and more able to coherently absorb the lessons of its forebearers. In light of this, it seems somewhat reasonable to consider the possibility of a do-over. For all our triumphs, every advantage of our intelligence and self-awareness is also reflected countless times in insane invention, in total megalomania. It’s almost a wonder we’ve come so far, or at least that we haven’t destroyed ourselves along the way. We’re selfish and self-destructive, ignorant to the point of blindness, arrogant to the point of madness. Actually, that’s putting it very generously – humanity is a deeply flawed species. Here’s hoping for both long-time fans and newcomers alike the English experience of the Chimera Ants is unforgettable.Humanity is an imperfect species. Overall, there’s a lot to be excited about- and in many ways, it’s like an early Christmas present. It will be interesting to hear the VA choices for several characters, including the duo in the picture for this article, and with the shift in the story, it should really test the abilities of the dub actors to capture the same depth and intensity as the original VA’s. The arc would run into early summer of 2014.Ģ017: With the conclusion of Greed Island’s first ever English dub, the Chimera Ants will finally be heard in English on the Sunday of this writing (12/10/17 for posterity.)Īs it stands, it’s rather difficult to talk too much at length about this very long and detailed arc without major spoilers for those watching for the first time, but the places in which the story goes during the next 60 episodes crosses the ranges of human emotions and psychology in ways shonen anime rarely, if ever does. At this point, the Chimera Ant arc is not complete yet in the manga, let alone the anime.Ģ013: Roughly a year after the manga finished the arc, the anime begins its version of it, marking the first new animated Hunter x Hunter story part since Greed Island’s OVAs finished in 2004.

Very early Sunday morning will mark the beginning of the longest arc in the series airing in English on Toonami in the United States, and for those who haven’t seen it- buckle up, you’re in for a ride.Īs with the Greed Island piece, here’s a brief history of the Chimera Ant arc:Ģ003: As the original HxH anime continued on with its set of Greed Island OVAs’, Yoshirio Togashi released the beginning of the arc in the manga on October 8th- which coupled with the frequent hiatuses of the series, would result in it lasting until April 2012- nearly 9 years!Ģ011: The Hunter x Hunter reboot (and the series mostly talked about) begins.
However, this might be even bigger…Īn arc considered by many serious fans of the Hunter x Hunter manga and anime to be one of the finest not only in the show, but also across the genre, is finally on the verge of being dubbed. A few months back, I wrote excitedly about the fact that Greed Island for the first time was receiving an English dub, despite existing in some anime form since at least the early 2000’s.
